Carol was first diagnosed with an abnormal PAP and HPV in 2002. Her OB/Gyn doctor recommended Cryotherapy, which seemed to work for a time. However, three years later, in 2005, the HPV showed up again along with a precancerous abnormal PAP Smear, reported as Cervical Intraepithelial Neoplasia III, or CIN III for short. Once again she was told that she needed surgery right away and this time she needed a more aggressive procedure, known as Laser Conization,” which uses a laser to cut a cone shaped section out of the cervix.

Although this procedure removed even more of her cervix than the Cryotherapy had three years earlier, it did not remove the HPV. One year later, the HPV caused the recurrence of more precancerous cells on the cervix. More surgery was recommended. A laser was used to cut off a quarter of an inch of Sarah’s cervix. Only four months later, a repeat Pap smear showed that Class II atypia and the HPV had come back.
