Pregnenolone is a natural hormone made primarily in the adrenal glands, but also in the brain. Standardized supplements are produced from diosgenin found in the Mexican Wild Yam. It is often referred to as the “Mother Hormone” because it can be converted by the body into DHEA, Progesterone, or in lesser amounts to other hormones, depending on the body’s needs.
Pregnenolone is known to stimulate the N-Methyl-D-Aspartate (NMDA) receptors in the brain. These receptors play an important role in regulating the function of the synapses between neurons that influence learning and memory. Aging is associated with a decrease in production of Pregnenolone as well as the number of NMDA receptors, which may partly account for the loss of memory and onset of senility that occurs with age.
Pregnenolone has been found to improve memory and clarity of thinking, as well as increase a sense of well being, reduce feelings of depression and enhance alertness and awareness.
L-Theanine, a water-soluble amino acid commonly found in Green Tea (Camelia sinensis). It has been widely studied for its ability to improve cognitive function and focused attention, which is believed to be affected through its modulation of alpha brain wave activity, which promotes sharp but relaxed mental activity without sedation.
L-Theanine crosses the blood-brain barrier and has been shown to promote the balance of neurotransmitters, including serotonin (the calming, sleep initiating, joyful neurohormone) and dopamine (the neurohormone of motivation, satisfaction and fulfillment).
L-Theanine has been shown to stabilize cognitive function affected by stress hormones. Specifically, L-Theanine decreases excessive cortisone levels made by the adrenal glands in times of stress, which when elevated can inhibit spatial learning and memory formation. L-Theanine has also been found to lower stress-related blood pressure and heart rate.
Researchers have also shown that L-Theanine can improve attention span and reaction time in stressed or anxious individuals. When combined with caffeine (as in my formula known as SynEnergy, which contains a natural source of Caffeine from Guarana leaf extract), L-Theanine appear to moderate the stimulating effects leading to improved visual information processing and accuracy when multitasking. Finally, its ability to selectively bind to glutamate receptors may the reason it appears to provide neuroprotective effects as well.
Bacopa monniera (Bacopin™) has been used in Ayurvedic medicine in India for the treatment of epilepsy since ancient times. The plant contains saponins known as Bacosides A and B attributed with the ability to enhance Protein Kinase-C (PKC) and its necessary growth-associated protein, which helps to synthesize new brain neurons, replacing the worn-out ones.
Clinical studies have shown that Bacopa monniera supplementation significantly increases short term memory and improves capabilities to think and reason, and at the same time also reduces fatigue, irritability, lack of concentration and insomnia.
Vitamin B1 (Thiamin) is essential for proper energy production in the brain. Vitamin B1 deficiency is characterized by impaired mental function, inability to concentrate, irritability, agitation, sleep disturbances, lethargy, weakness, muscle pains, and paresthesia. It mimics the action of acetylcholine, the brain neurotransmitter involved in memory. Clinical trials have shown that Vitamin B1 improves mental function in individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and age-related impaired mental function (senility), as well as patients with epilepsy.
DMAE (Dimethylaminoethanol) is a B-Vitamin like factor found to stabilize cell membranes in the brain. Senility and aging are thought to be accelerated by cross-linking of neuronal tissue induced by hydroxyl (OH) free radicals. As a potent hydroxyl (OH) free radical scavenger, DMAE appears to protect neuronal membranes and important enzyme functions related to gene expression and the elimination of damaged cellular components. It has been found in clinical trials to increase absolute theta power induced by mental demand and significantly increase memory and symbol recognition.
